The Switzerland-based company Nord Stream, which operated the pipelines, claims to be entitled to compensation of €580 million. The proceedings, led by Judge Clare Moulder, are expected to last around five weeks.

The court will not determine who exactly blew up the pipelines, and the hearings will focus on whether an insurance payout should be made. The insurer, Lloyd’s of London, maintains that the pipelines were blown up on the instructions of a national government (Russia, the United States, or Ukraine), or by subnational actors from Ukraine as a result of a military conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, and that therefore no insurance payout should be made.

Nord Stream argues that the pipelines were located outside the conflict zone, were not military sites, and that the sabotage was not aimed at achieving military objectives for any of the parties to the conflict.

The explosions on 26 September 2022 caused unprecedented damage to three Nord Stream pipelines and the not-yet-operational Nord Stream 2. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office opened a case on charges of international terrorism.
